A Life on Skates
Meet Milou Ruurs, one of the trainers behind Skatography’s inline skating classes. At 22 years old, Milou has already spent most of her life on skates. She first started skating at the age of four, and the sport has been a constant part of her life ever since. While she now enjoys inline skating and cycling as well, ice skating remains her main discipline. She can regularly be found at Amsterdam’s famous Jaap Eden Baan, where she shares her passion for skating by teaching the next generation of skaters. Born and raised in Amsterdam and Amstelveen, Milou still lives in the area today.
From Young Skater to Trainer
Milou’s passion for teaching started surprisingly early. At just nine years old, she got her first taste of giving skating lessons — and quickly discovered how much she enjoyed it.
“Teaching is the most fun thing I do, and I get an incredible amount of enjoyment from it,” she says.
Since then, she has gone on to teach skaters of all ages and levels, from four-year-olds to adults. What she enjoys most is seeing her students develop over time:
“It gives me a lot of satisfaction to see my students improve every week and to see how much fun they have.”
Her experience working with young children, combined with her own enthusiasm for skating, makes her particularly at home when working with our youngest skaters.
Fun Comes First
For Milou, teaching isn’t only about learning technique or becoming a better skater.
“The most important thing is that skaters have fun, and that they can learn the sport I love so much.”
That philosophy is something she brings to every lesson. At Skatography, Milou will mainly be helping with our Friday inline skating classes, while also being happy to jump in wherever and whenever she is needed. Whether she is on the ice at Jaap Eden Baan or on inline skates with our young skaters, one thing is clear: Milou loves skating — and she loves sharing that passion with others.
